What are Freight Claims?

Freight claims are legal requests for compensation when goods are lost, damaged, or undelivered.
The three main types are:

  • Damage (repair, replacement, allowance)

  • Non-Delivery

  • Shortage

Carrier Liability

  • Canada: Usually $2/lb. Always confirm your carrier’s terms. 

 

Steps to Protecting Your Shipment

  • Proper Packaging – Use sturdy materials, secure items, and avoid overhang.

  • Accurate Documentation – Double-check bills of lading and labels.

  • Safe Loading/Unloading – Use correct equipment and handling.

  • Inspect at Delivery – Note damages on the POD and take photos.

  • Report Quickly – Provide photos and paperwork immediately.

  • Consider Insurance – Cover shipments at full invoice value.

Common Claim Denials

  • Poor packaging

  • Shipped “At Shipper’s Risk”

  • Not noting damages/ shortages on the POD at delivery

  • Missing deadlines or documentation
